ThinkingTeen’s Harry Potter Rant

Let’s settle this once and for all. This may be such a ridiculous thing to make an entire page about, but it’s ticked me off soooooo badly that I’ve unfortunately been forced to make this rant.

So, Harry is a wizard. So what? He waves a stick around and says stuff in Aramaic/Greek/Latin/whatever. He defeats the bad guys and their racism and terrorism. He goes to school and escapes his abusive aunt and uncle. It’s amazing that a story about fighting for what is right, friendship, and defeating prejudice and bigotry is banned from our schools simply because it has witchcraft. There are far, far worse books out there than Harry Freaking Potter. They include far more bloodshed, far more violence and bigotry. And they’re in our schools’ libraries. Nobody’s fighting about them. No, Harry Potter is evil and is written by Satan in the form of a British woman trying to make a pound or two to feed herself and her young daughter. Let’s protest it and say JK Rowling is a Satanist, while our kids stay at home watching Saw, playing the bloodiest video games on the market, or failing that reading Narnia… which also includes magic and a talking lion, but nobody complains about Narnia, hmmm.

If you weren’t exposed to evangelical Christianity you might think this is just silly, but it’s very real. The last church I went to really did not like Harry Potter. I was one of the few kids there who was allowed to read it. my mother angrily left because the other kids’ mothers told her she failed as a parent for letting her 13 year old daughter read a fantasy novel.

A frickin’ FANTASY novel.
